Windows XP/SP3:


On my third 'clean' re-install of 2010 to replace 2003 and I still have the following problem which needs someone who understands the presumed change in the explorer API between 2003 and 10.

Any attempt to 'OPEN' a new file from the file menu or 'SAVE AS' an existing file in all OFFICE products causes the programme to hang if I try and drill down or up a few folders or drives. I get 'Not responding' in T Manager. It seems to cope with one or two jumps only. 2003 does not exhibit this problem, nor do other progs which use a GUI explorer window such as Acrobat/Paint Shop Pro etc etc. Directly opening a file in 2010 from the basic explorer/my computer GUI works ok. 2010 on my W7 set up functions normally.

I have searched the internet and tried a few solutions involving reg changes to 'recent files' and 'places' to no avail. I do not wish to re-install Windows and have run a few sfc cycles with no change.

I would appreciate any pointers, or do I just quit and revert to 2003?

OK, that's two days now. Can anyone give me an Office forum where there are folk from M$ around to answer please?

Are you running both Word 2003 & 2010 on the same system? If not, did you uninstall Office 2003 before installing office 2010, or simply do an upgrade? Do you have any Office Addins installed (especially Bluetooth addins)? What is 'T Manager'?

Hi macro - thanks for responding.

On each install I have used the M$ 'remove 2003' function on the M$ site.

Only add-ins so far are from standard install

T manager - Task Manager

Office 2003 should only ever have been capable of uninstallation once and that via 'Programs & Features' in the Windows Control Panel, without the need for other tools.

Before going any further, I suggest you go to 'Programs & Features' in the Windows Control Panel and ensure Office 2003 has been ininstalled. Uninstall Office 2010, then try uninstalling Office 2003, in that order. If necessary, use the tools at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2639197 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301, respectively. Once both have been removed, try reinstalling Office 2010.

Paul - I don't have 'Programs & Features' in XP - I assume you mean 'Add/remove'? Those M$ tools you link were the ones I mentioned that I used to remove all versions of Office before this last installation of 2010.

All I have showing are:
Office Converter Pack
Office File Validation add-in and
M$ Office Pro 2010

Of possible interest is that even after use of the M$ removal tools I still have Office 11.0 and 14.0 folders in the registry. I'm pretty sure at one point in the many attempts I had manually removed all references to Office from reg. Should there be an 11.0 folder after a 'clean' install of 2010?

As an afterthought - I think I may have applied the M$ 'remove' fixes in chronological order rather than starting with 2010 as you posted. Would this be a problem?

Yes, 'Add/Remove Programs' is what I meant. With Office Aps, it's best to remove in the reverse order of installation. You should remove each of:
• Office Converter Pack
• Office File Validation Add-in
• MS Office Pro 2010

After that, you could try using Revo Uninstaller (http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_..._download.html) to erase any remnants of the above (and Office 2003) before reinstalling Office 2010.

Thanks Paul - I'll give it a go that way when I have a few hours. I use Revo and it found no 'remnants' on each occasion. Any ideas on the existence of the 11.0 folder in the reg?

The Office 11.0 folder is a remnant from Office 2003. I'd expect it to be empty.

OK - I'll see what is left next time!

Those 3 gone with Revo, but Reg folders still exist and are populated although they point to (now) non-existent Prog folders.

Should I manually remove them?

Cleared all 'Office' reg folders, re-installed 2010 default install. Exactly the same problem.

That suggests the problem is either with an Addin you haven't mentioned, or that your Windows installation is itself not working properly.
