Default Help with Associations

I seem to have a problem accessing any of the Office applications, I have a spreadsheet on Excell that is linked to a web server and can afford to mess it up.
When I click on any applications I get a box up stating:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
C:\program file\microsoft office\office14\excel.exe. (when I tried excel)

The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action, create an association in the set associatons control panel.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
When I go into Control Panel: Default Programs: Associate file or Protocol with Program. There is a vast array of choices and I'm not sure which extention or extentions to click on.

The only thing that has happened since my last visit to Excel, Adobe Reader X sent me an update. Can anyone help me through this.

Thanks Freebee2

I have restored my system back 5 days and this has cleared my problem for now.
