Default Office is FUBAR

Greetings,

I was happily operating Win7 Pro 64-bit on a Dell Vostro 1220 using Office 2003. Then I came across an old Works Suite 99 CD, and decided to install Works 4.5, so I could run loan amortization schedules. In hindsight, this may have been ill-advised . . .

Tried to use Works 4.5 and got an error message, so after a few attempts to fix it, I uninstalled it using Revo Uninstaller. Now many (but not all) of my Word and Excel documents are askew; Word line spacing, tabs, and indentations are wacky, and the fonts look tiny on the page even though the toolbar indicates 12-point.

I took corrective measures, including a Windows update, Dell driver update, virus scan, un/reinstallation of Office 2003, and a registry scan with CCleaner (which found many font errors). As a last resort I reinstalled Works 4.5 and behold, all my Office documents were restored to their previously good condition! That is, until the first restart, when the askew docs returned. Current condition: Works 4.5 is gone, Office 2003 is FUBAR. Any and all assistance is welcome.

Hi Art,

It really wasn't a good idea to install Works Suite 99 over Office 2003, which you've now done twice!! If you really need both (and assuming Works Suite 99 is actually compatible with Win 7), install Works Suite 99 first.

Have you tried doing a System restore to a point before you first installed Works Suite 99? That should restore Office 2003. If not, a repair should fix any remaining glitches (Help|Detect & Repair). Otherwize you can use Revo to remove all traces of both Works Suite 99 and Office 2003, before reinstalling either/both (in the correct order).

Hi Paul,

The only component I installed from Works Suite 99 was Works 4.5a. It's now gone and I don't need it.

Neither Repair nor System Restore corrected the problem. The last action taken was to uninstall Office 2003 and Works 4.5a using Revo, followed by a reinstall and update of Office.

At this point there's (theoretically) not a trace of Works on the PC, yet something it did continues to mess up Office 2003. Must be something I haven't considered yet, but currently I'm stumped.

Hi Art,

Try reinstalling your printer driver. You also mentioned previously that CCleaner found many font errors. It might be an idea to reinstall all your fonts.

FWIW, I try to stay away from products like CCleaner & Revo - both have been implicated in a range of system problems.

Paul,

The HP website shows all printer drivers up-to-date (the documents are askew onscreen, prior to printing).

Not sure how I would reinstall all fonts; I found no guidelines for that in an online search.

On a hunch I searched the registry and found plenty of files relating to Works and Word97, even though all that was supposedly removed by Revo. I deleted those, being careful to leave alone any files that only partially contain the word "works", like "workspace", etc. Restarted expecting total victory, but no luck. At least I didn't mess anything up with my registry foray. I remain stumped.

Paul,

You were right on target! In all this fooling around with Works 4.5, somehow several fonts disappeared from Windows. Anything that had been written in that (disappeared) font then appeared in some other font, where the formatting no longer matched up, making everything askew. That's why documents written in a font that didn't disappear still looked ok. Reloading fonts restored everything to good order.

You have my sincere thanks for your assistance.
