Paul,

You were right on target! In all this fooling around with Works 4.5, somehow several fonts disappeared from Windows. Anything that had been written in that (disappeared) font then appeared in some other font, where the formatting no longer matched up, making everything askew. That's why documents written in a font that didn't disappear still looked ok. Reloading fonts restored everything to good order.
