Default Office 2007 re-installation issues

I've been using Office Pro 2007 for about 3 years on an XP desktop. During that time I've had to reinstall XP twice due to a piece of buggy software and lately a virus attack that corrupted some XP files. Now that I have reinstalled Office I'm getting the message to activate it and it tells me that it fails the activation. So I do the "telephone call" to MS and after repeating the ID code from the warning window, the robot tells me that I have an invalid copy of Office. And hangs up without offering me a chance to speak with a human to describe my situation. Yet, I've successfully installed it at least twice before.

I've read numerous descriptions of the licensing and activation rules and am wondering if there is a limit to how many times Office can be installed on the same machine. I would think that if I purchased the product I should be allowed to keep reinstalling it on the same computer forever if the computer kept failing for other reasons.

Can anyone describe the actual rule that would apply in my situation and possibly direct me to someplace within MS where I can try to correct this situation?

Hi Fred,

Are you sure you're inputting the Office product key and not the Windows one? If the Office key worked before, there's no reason it shouldn't work now - reinstalling on the same hardware has no effect on your licence.

Default Different partitions?

Paul,

When I use the Activation Wizard, it asks for the Installation ID which is generated by the Wizard and then the robot on the phone gives me another number to enter on the screen and then tells me that my disk is invalid. In reading the Installation rules within Office "About" section, they mention that a device is ONE partition on a machine. This may be my problem because it initially was installed on Drive C:; after a software bug killed my machine 18 months ago I had to install XP and Office on Drive E: and 2 weeks ago, after a severe virus corrupted some system files, I formatted C: & E: and installed XP and Office both back on C:.

Before I go any further with trying to "talk" with MS, is there a way for me to re-enter the original Key Code without uninstalling and re-installing Office to make sure the problem isn't with what I entered last week as the Key Code?

Thanks,
Fred

Hi Fred,

If you've reformatted both partitions, there shouldn't be an issue with reinstalling Office on the C drive. If the product key that you input during the reinstallation wasn't valid, it wouldn't have been accepted. So, unless you've used a system recovery partition/disk that includes a default trial version of Office 2007, I wouldn't expect there to be a problem. If the reinstall did include a default trial version of Office 2007, and you're trying to install the full product, you'll need to uninstall the trial first.
