If your laptop can support the newer applications, you would probably be best to go for Office 2007. Office 2003 is still very good ( I use it myself ) but I think if I was buying a new system, I would buy the latest version. Also, Office 2007 has been around long enough for most of the major problems to be fixed.

With regard to XP, do you mean Windows XP rather than Vista? I don't have any experience of Vista but the same information applies. I guess XP will be discontinued in the not too distant future so you may as well go for Vista.
