Shortcut for date/time insert
For Office 2010, in Excel the CNTL-; and CNTL-: keys will insert the date and time (respectively). Does anyone know if there is a way to set the same shortcut keys to do this in the various Outlook functions (e.g. Tasks, Calendars, emails, etc.).
Or is there a way to set these shortcut keys in MSWord, and then they will get picked up automatically by Outlook? |

Each application has its own shortcuts.
For Outlook, see: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ou...003084223.aspx For Word, see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290938 Where the different applications use different shortcut keys for the same things, you could re-assign the shortcut keys. You'd want to make sure they're not in use for something else you want a shortcut for, first, though. You can't, however, assign a function from one application to a shortcut key in another - at least, not without some serious macro coding.

Paul, thank you very much for your reply.
I have gone through the documentation regarding the (existing) shortcuts, but unfortunately it's the inserting of date and time that I'm specifically looking for. Ever since I found out (10 years ago) that the Notepad used the F5 key to do this, I've been trying to get this same shortcut functionality in all of the text editors that I use. Now when I see that there is a shortcut to insert these values in Excel, I hoped that there was a way to set the same key combination in Outlook and MSWord. Norm. |

In Word, the keyboard shortcut to insert a date field is Alt-Shift-D; to insert a time field it's Alt-Shift-T.
Note that both of these udate automatically, though not dynamically. You can convert them to plain text, so they won't update, by selecting them and pressing Ctrl-Shift-F9. Don't know about Outlook.

Excellent Paul, that's what I was looking for. It's unfortunate that it doesn't insert text rather than a dynamic field, but I guess I'll have to get used to using the F9 function.
It also works throughout Outlook, but it's also unfortunate that it isn't consistent with Excel where the CNTL-; and CNTL-: insert the date/time (as text). Thanks for your help! Norm. |
