hi linadze,

The problem may be caused by a 3rd-prty addin installed on your system. In general, anything copied to the windows clipboard should remain while opening an application.

A 3rd-party addin is any application that provides additional functionality. For example, Adobe Acrobat Pro adds the ability to print to PDF and to merge to PDF. In Word 2010, you can see what Word addins are installed by going to File|Word Options|Addins. In Word 2003 (used by linadze), you can see what Word addins are installed by going to Tools|Templates and Addins.

Of course, it's also possible some other piece of software that's been installed on a system and doesn't work as an Addin for Office might also interfere with the clipboard's functionality.

any advice how i might be able to go about solving such a problem like this?
is it sometimes necessary to remove add-ins if you find you don't use them ("instant messaging contacts" or "send to bluetooth" for example)?
can they be removed or uninstalled?

hi wackjack,

Whilst you can disable or remove unused addins (via the Manage dropdown on the Addins screen), those particular addins are unlikely to be the cause of the problem.

As for identifying what else might be causing the problem, it's really a case of idenitying the program that lies behind it. If it's always a problem, that suggests a programs that starts whenever Windows does. In that case, you can use Windows Defender to temporarily disable any suspect applications. For details on this and other approaches, see: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Startup.htm

i appreciate all this knowledge, good stuff by the way...thanks for the link!
yeah I mean, I'm no expert on computers but I don't understand what program could be causing something so minor but irritating as a single bullet point appearing in the clipboard every time Word starts up.
this is a problem that occurs every time i open Word...
is it likely that a start-up program is interfering with Microsoft Word to this extent?
what types of programs usually cause problems?

Hi wackjack,

Perhaps I missed something, but what has:
Quote:
a single bullet point appearing in the clipboard every time Word starts up
got to do with the thread's topic: "opening office file deletes copied text from windows clipboard"?

because that is what's happening...when I open a file, what I copied is deleted from the clipboard automatically and replaced with a bullet point.

Hi wackjack,

So is you're saying:
(a) if you've copied something to the clipboard, it gets deleted and replaced with a bullet point when you start Word; or
(b) a bullet point is placed on the clipboard (even if empty) when you start Word?
If (a), does that happen if, say, you copy some plain text from Notepad before starting Word?

Here's a link to a discussion about how you can go about resolving clipboard problems: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...3-E5C6677DE280
Note that mention is made of a program named 'Babylon Translation Software' causing problems. If that's installed on your system, it could be the culprit. Other software that is installed on your system could also cause problems. If the problems only started occurring after installing a particular application (or an update to one), try uninstalling that application (or its update).

i don't have that software installed on my computer but thanks for the advice and the link...and replying to the post before this one, (I don't use Notepad) but both a and b occurs. I copy or cut some text, open Word, and try pasting it...the text is no longer on the clipboard, but a bullet point is...every time I open word the bullet point appears. Tried the same using the Notepad, and the problem still occurs but I never use that application.
