Default Office for mac 2011/Office 2003 compatability

On my Win 7 64b bit computer running Office for Windows 2003 I can open but cannot edit or save word docs sent to me from a macbook pro running Office for Mac 2011. I usually get an error message about permissions but the message details vary. I have the same probloem whether I receive the Office for Mac document via email or from a network share. Perhaps there is a compatibility pack for the Office 2003 installation?

Hi jwhiter,

If you install the Office 2007 compatability pack (http://www.microsoft.com/download/en...aylang=en&id=3), that will let you open files saved in the Office 2007 & later file formats.

Thanks for your response. However, I have the 2007 compatability pack already installed. I should have said in the initial post that the Office 2003 installatrion is SP3. I suspect the problem is not really one of compatability but of permissions settings on the documents, but I don't know how I can change these.

Hi jwhiter,

If it's only a permissions issue, that suggests the document is password-protected, or you're trying to open it from a read-only location. Or it could be something to do with macros and security settings. Without knowing exactly what the error message is, it will be hard to help...

I have played about a bit since I first posted and I now seem to be able to manage Word attachments to emails sent from the Mac on the PC. I'm not sure how this changed but it has. But I still cannot open Word documents on the Mac from a Win 7 PC on a network share. I can save these documents to the PC and edit them there though. This again is slightly different from when I first posted - then, I couldn't even save the documents. The error message has changed too. It now says nothing about permissions. Here is what it does say: "The document name or path is not valid. Try one or more of the following: *Check the path to make sure it was typed correctly. *On ther file menu click Open. Search for the file using this dialogue box. (\\Thomas's Mac\UserName\DocumentName.docx)." Clearly it's not a problem with the path because I can see the file in the network share; I just can't open it

Hi jwhiter,

In that case, it seems to be a network issue, perhaps involving read/write privileges, rather than an issue with MS Office. I can't help you there.
