Mac Office 2008 and OS 10.7.2
I as not sure if this is an Office question or an Excel question, but I will start with the problem. If this should be posted in the Excel forum, please let me know and I will post there.
My old Mac desktop died a dirty death, and I bought a new Mac running 10.7.2 I was told by the folks in the Apple store that my version of Office (2008) would work with the new OS and Processor, but I am having problems. At first, I migrated my files to the new computer. When I would open a Word file, more than one would open. Then I reinstalled Office, and that problem 'may' be fixed, but I have an even more urgent issue: Excel won't run. When it starts, I get the following notice: Microsoft Error Reporting log version: 2.0 Error Signature: Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS Date/Time: 2011-12-11 23:56:27 +0000 Application Name: Microsoft Excel Application Bundle ID: com.microsoft.Excel Application Signature: XCEL Application Version: 12.3.1.110725 Crashed Module Name: CoreFoundation Crashed Module Version: 635.15 Crashed Module Offset: 0x00033942 Blame Module Name: MicrosoftComponentPlugin Blame Module Version: 12.3.1.110725 Blame Module Offset: 0x000edc87 Application LCID: 1033 Extra app info: Reg=en Loc=0x0409 Crashed thread: 0 The basic question is: Will Office 2008 work with the new OS? What have others experienced? Any thoughts as to how to fix Excel? |

Hi Warren,
How did you go about reinstalling office on the new Mac?

Hi Paul,
Thank you so much for your interest in my problem. It is really bugging me, as I use Excel quite a bit. To reinstall, I went to the disk that I purchased. I just inserted it, and went through the installation like I did the first time on my old machine. I see that Office 2008 is supposed to work with Lion, but I don't know how to make them like each other. I think my Lion is snacking on my Excel. Warren |

Hi Warren,
It seems like you've gone about the installation the right way so, though it's possibl the installer app didn't do all of what it's supposed to. You could try uninstalling & re-installing. Beyond that, I'd suggest raising the issue in one of the specialist Mac forums. You might also want to read: http://excelsemipro.com/2011/07/micr...mac-os-x-lion/

Thank you Paul. I will try the uninstall route, reinstall and see how it works. I did read the link you sent about the issues people have been having, but I am very hopeful that uninstalling and reinstalling will fix everything.
Short of that, it won't kill me financially to buy Office 2011, but I hope it won't be necessary. I really appreciate your help. I will let you know what happens. Warren |

Hi Warren,
FWIW, Office 2011 is far more capable than Office 2008. For one thing, Office 2011 supports vba (macros), which Office 2008 doesn't. Macros can add enormous power to document management.

WOW! What an ordeal! I went through 3 pages I found on the web to uninstall Office 2008. It went 'fairly' well, although some of the items they told me to remove from various folders weren't there.
I reinstalled and, although Excel now runs, there were two issues: 1. The updater would not run. (I have since gone to Microsoft and run the updater from there, and it appears to be OK.) 2. When I open document A, it also opens document B. (That condition still is there, although it is liveable.) I appreciate your suggestion to bite the bullet and buy Office 2011. I really, really hope it doesn't give me the fits that this one has. I will probably do that this weekend. I have just about fried my little brain tonight. With your help, Paul, at least I am up and if not running, at least limping quickly. Thank you very much!! Warren |

Hi Warren,
If it's the same 'other' document that opens whenever you start Word, that suggests someone has saved a document over Word's 'Normal' template. The simplest way to fix this is to check where Word's 'Normal' template is stored (on a PC you'd find this via Word Options > Advanced > General > File Locations > User templates), then close Word, navigate to the 'Normal' template's folder and delete the template. Word will create a new one when it re-starts. You'll lose any Word customisations you might have made, though. The alternative is to open the template (via File > Open, choose 'All Word templates' from the 'type' dropdown, then navigate to the 'Normal' template's folder and select the template), then delete the unwanted content & save the template.

Sorry I have been unresponsive for the past few days. I got something truly awful and have been sick since Tuesday.
I am not sure what was going on, but it appeared that if I didn't close document A when I quit Word or Excel, it came along for the ride when I opened document B. Thanks again for all of the help and suggestions! Now if I can only survive this onslaught to my digestive system! Warren |
