Default optimizing computer for MS Office

Hi, I noticed that with a long Word file, like 50 or more pages, when I save or make changes, it takes the computer a little while to perform the task.

what upgrades will make that go faster?

1 windows 64 bit?
2 office 64 bit?
3 better processor?
4 more Ram?
5 none of the above?

Your profile indicates you're already using Office 2013 on Windows 8. What configuration are you running those in and on what hardware?

In any event, the biggest bottleneck in file saving has little to do with CPU speed or how much RAM you've got, but with drive you're saving to and how fragmented it is. Some drives also perform better than others - it's not really a matter of size.

As for what happens when editing (making changes), say, a Word document, that can be affected by your display driver, printer driver, the amount of graphics in the document, whether you're using Draft view or Print Layout view, have Word configured to display document graphics, and do on.

Hi, I am running a dual-core pentium processor, 32 bit, with 4 gb ram.
I have windows and all programs and current files installed on an SSD, and that does help a lot!
I don't usually have graphics in my word files, just text.
I use print layout.
I don't have a real problem or anything, just wondering what to look for when I buy my next PC-- how to optimize for my particular usage habits.

Dual-core pentiums are quite old technology now (discontinued in 2009) and most people would probably regard them as being at the low end of the spectrum for running either Windows 8 or Office 2013. No amount of upgrading the basic machine is going to turn it into something that will match a recent PC's performance; I doubt you could buy anything so lowly-spec'd for running Windows today. That said, you really don't need more than 4Gb RAM to run Windows 8 & Office 2013 -and you'll often find even entry level PCs with more than that.

well, here in Israel we are a couple years behind you, I guess. pentium dual core is still being recommended for home use.
I just bought a new PC yesterday for my kids, and it also has a pentium dual core, although it at least is 64 bit compatible. The cheap PCs over here run a celeron processor.
