Default Mail Merge and Files on Network Drive

I have an issue with Mailmerge and my network drive in Office 2007.

When try to merge a Recipient list from an excel file from the network drive, after merging happens, the $ signs and other currency data gets erased. When I do this same method with both the word and excel files saved locally to my desktop, it works flawlessly. I have tried ODBC connections and DDE connections as an alternative, but nothing seems to cure this issue. I have full control on the network folder, and i'm a local admin on my PC.

Please advise, this is driving me crazy.
