And can get it to add a word after to by doing
Code:
 {MERGEFIELD StartDate1 \f "Goodbye"}
but i cant get it to do both?

Hi Tony,

If the field is always populated, you can simply add the text after it. Otherwise, you need something like:
{IF{MERGEFIELD StartDate1 \@ YYMMDD} <> "000000" "{MERGEFIELD StartDate1 \@ "DD MMMM YYYY"} Goodbye"}
