Default mail merge

i have a mail merge which is linked to excel A.xlsx!sheet1 as source data

I did the wizard and there are a lot of fields being put on the word document and i have save it.

I have another excel B.xlsx which is identical to A i.e same headers in sheet1. only the data is different. for example A has 50 rows, B has 100 rows.

I dont want to re-run the mail merge wizard. Can i just change the sourcefile of the word in mailmerge? the fields items of A.xlsx is equal to fields items of B.xlsx. so i just need to re-point the mail merge word doc to excel B without redoing the fields items one by one again? how to achieve that in word 2007?

Hi eric,

The easiest way is to rename the two files, with B.xlsx being renamed A.xlsx. If you don't want to do that, make a copy of the Word mailmerge main document (so that the existing one keeps pointing to A.xlsx), temporarily re-name A.xlsx and, when you open the copied mailmerge main document for B.xlsx and Word complains that it can't find the data source, point it to B.xlsx. You can then restore the orignal name for A.xlsx.

thanks

in excel for pivot button, you can change datasource via a button?

for word, is there any button/command for this? like change link for mail merge? i am trying to avoid renameing filename to achieve that. :O

i did what you said but when i save/close the word doc, and reopen it, it is still pointing to a.xls despite i have changed it to b.xls.

Hi eric,

There is no Word command like that for changing the data source.

In Word, if you get a prompt asking whether to run the SQL command and you answer no, you will be able to start the mailmerge process over again, but you can use the same document and not have to change any fields, etc.
