Hello,



I have a document which prints a name on books on the first page. I want to add a rule so if the line breaks it should only do so if the next word is longer then 3 characters, if it's 2 characters or less it should autosize the font so it fits on one line. Any ideas how to get this to work?

Hi Spurk,

Paragraph justification normally takes care of that. Going to Word Options|Advanced > Compatability Options > Layout options and checking the 'Do full justification the way WordPerfect 6.x for Windows does' option also allows Word to fit a bit more on a justified line.

Hello,

I attached a screenshot where it does not work very well. Do you have any ideas how to auto adjust this? Would love if the font scaled down for a perfect fit.

Hi Spurk,

The text alignment there suggests you haven't formatted the paragraph as justified. The 'Do full justification the way WordPerfect 6.x for Windows does' option only works on justified paragraphs.

Another possibility is to create a table with one cell that has a fixed height and width (eg Row= 'Exactly' 1 cm high Table = 8cm 'preferred width'). Then format the cell options with 'wrap text' off and 'fit text' on. With this setup, no text wrapping will occur. If the text is too long, Word will make every character narrower so that it fits.

Better still, see the table in the attached document. In particular look at the table width & column width (they are the same) and, under Cell > Options, the text wrapping and fit options. With the options set this way, you don't really need to specify a row height unless you don't like the default. With this setup, any text you insert into the table will be forced to fit on one line.

You can switch off the table borders if you don't want to see them.

Hi Spurk,

The problem is that your address-block field is in a frame inside the table. You need to delete the frame before putting the field into the table.

Im really not much a office user and i feel somewhat dumb asking these questions. But how do i do that? I don't see any frame at all :/

Hi Spurk,

You'll need to convert the table back to text. A dotted frame should then become visible. Click on the frame's border, then right-click and choose Format Frame > Delete frame. You can then recreate the table cell.

Note: I wouldn't expect to see any resizing until after you excute the mailmerge.

I cant find the dots you are speaking of, is there any chance you could fix the file for me? Im not getting anywhere with it :/

Hi Spurk,

See attached.

Note: although the mergefields are still present, the document no longer functions as a mailmerge document. That is because without the data source Word will not allow it to remain onefor editing. Everything should be OK when you re-do the mailmege set-up and re-attach the datasource. If this works as I expect, the text compression will work when the mailmerge is executed, but you won't be able to preview it correctly.
