Default I can't read a "read-only" document !

MS have changed how read-only documents work in Word.
I have a complex mail merge document which I have set to read-only so that I don't over-write it accidentally.
Now that I have installed Office 365 I find that read-only behaviour has changed radically - it is not even possible to edit a document then save-as something else. But that isn't the pain, at least for me . . .

Scrolling through the mailings to find the one that I want is also regarded as an edit, so I can't do that - for example to find and print a particular page of the mail merge.
So now "read only" means I can't read it !
There's a clumsy workaround - I've saved a copy should I ever lose the original, and taken the read-only property off the working copy.
I had heard rumours that MS are going to reverse this particular change - does anyone know more about that please, or have a better workaround ?
