Merge Creates Doc When Field Blank but Contains Formula
This should be simple, but it's not.
I'm using Office on my Mac. Doing a simple mail merge using Excel as my data source. I have columns in the spreadsheet that contain formulas (if a cell is not blank, populate with x) that extend down 2000 rows. Basically, if column B is not blank, columns, E & F will populate with the contents of E2 and F2. When I go to do the mail merge, I'm getting 2000 documents instead of 6, I suspect because there are formulas in columns E and F. I cannot for the life of me find how to NOT merge if the contents of column B are NULL. |

Your formula doesn't leave the cells empty - it inserts a space into them. In any event, all you need do is apply a mailmerge filter to exclude records that have only a space in that field.

Thanks! You are correct, however, I couldn't solve the issue by excluding records with a space in that field because the field was contained within a text box. Mail merge rules don't function the same way for fields in headers, footers, text boxes, etc.
My workaround was to create a column header/merge field called Blank, write a similar formula with blanks and spaces, insert the field "Blank" into my document, NOT in a text box, and eliminate records with blank spaces. =IF(ISBLANK(B3)," ","") It was a weird set of circumstances, but this worked. Thanks for your help. You brought me over the finish line. |
