Default Mailmerge to email as attachments

I am using mailmerge and hope to send the results as attachments to an email. Unfortunately I get an error message when I try this.
"Couldn't send mail because of MAPI failure "Operation not supported"

There are normaly about 10 records to mail so a manual operation is not out of the question, but I am also stuck here as if I send to a file all the records are on one document.

Can anyone help me?
John

Hi John,

Do you have MS Outlook installed (even if you're not using it)? Mailmerge to email requires it to be installed, even if you don't ordinarily use it. If it is installed, try repairing Office (Word Options|Resources|Diagnose).

Paul
Thanks for your interest. The machine I was using is networked and the usual arrangements for email use Microsoft Exchange, although Outlook is used with this to handle the files. Will this be the problem?

Goto Start|Run and input 'Fixmapi', then press Enter.
If the mailmerge now works, problem solved. If not, you may need to uninstall & reinstall Exchange System Manager, then re-run 'Fixmapi'.

I've just found a discussion on this in another forum, where the recommended approach is:

Quote:
Try to rename the Mapi32.dll file, and then start the Fixmapi.exe program: 1. Click Start, and then click Search.
2. Click All files and folders.
3. In the All or part of the file name box, type mapi32.dll, and then click Search.
4. When the search process is complete, right-click the Mapi32.dll file, and then click Rename.
5. Type Mapi32.old, and then press ENTER.
6. Click Start a new search, and then click All files and folders.
7. In the All or part of the file name box, type fixmapi.exe, and then click Search.
8. When the search process is complete, double-click Fixmapi.exe to start the repair process.
9. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the repair process.

If this does not work, try to run the program as administrator. Go to the location of WINWORD.EXE and create a shortcut from it by right-clicking - then choose 'compatibility mode' and select 'Run as administrator, save your shortcut to the desktop.
Hopefully you won't have to run Word as an Administrator ...

Default Still a problem

I am using Office 2016; just installed it on a new computer. Used to (on previous computer) Mailmerge as attachement all the time. Now I am getting the same error message.

I can't rename Mapi32.dll - it says it requires admin rights, then when I continue, it says it still can't do it. I right clicked on it and selected Rename as Admin and even Delete as Admin, nothing works. Runnig fixmapi.exe as Administrator similarly does absolutely nothing.
So 10 years after this was posted, users are still clueless how to solve this.

Help, please.

Have you tried repairing your Office installation?

Default Many things tried, nothing works

Yes, I have done a repair, but not a removal and re-install of Office. This is a new computer, so Office has only been on the computer for 2 weeks. I never downloaded or installed the trial version of Office 365 (it was not pre-installed).
I am using the 64 bits version of Office 2016.
I turned off Norton 360 for 15 minutes... same result.
I tried running Word in Safe mode (to avoid Normal.dotm and add-in problems). Same result.
I can share a document as Email / Attachment; it opens up an Outlook like window (as per usual), with a new email and the file attached. If I send it to myself, I receive it a few minutes later (in Outlook).

All indications are that Outlook is set up as the standard email client.

It works just fine to complete Mailmerge to Email as text or HTML, I only get this error when I chose "as attachement".

I have read several posts on MSAnswers and this one here, and even though there are a lot of suggestions (most of which I have tried), nobody seems to have found the answer. At least no single post is marked as The ANSWER. The answer you supplied at the end of this string, is also not marked or responded to as "The ANSWER" so I can't be sure it worked for the OP or not. However, it obviously doesn't work for me, since I cannot do anything with the two files in question. If that suggestion is indeed The ANSWER, then I obviously need help in how to manipulate the file name on the first file and then run the second, because neither of those actions are allowed on my system.

I had this problem several years ago, and posted this same question on MSAnswers NL, got a lot of suggestion, but none of them apparently answered my problem. I must have solved it back then, but never shared how on MS Answers. I know I eventually was able to do this Mailmerge to Email for at least two years until I switched to Office 2019. Used that for a year and am now back to Office 2016 and it won't work (again).

Since I have downloaded Office 2016 installation files for both the 64 and 32 bits versions on my HDD, I am wondereing whether I eventually installed the 32 bits version, and that solved it? Who remembers that kinda stuff that long ago? That seems dumb, but then we are dealing with MicroSoft, so anything is possible.

The mere fact nothing was marked as an answer doesn't mean a proposed solution wasn't correct. People often lack the courtesy to give any feedback, let alone acknowledge correct solutions they've been provided as being an answer. In any event, the OP's particular problem was solved via the solution posted in #4 or #5 above.

Part of the problem may be due to Outlook's security settings. Try installing the 'Express ClickYes' utility available from: A program is trying to send e-mail on your behalf. Bypass this message with ClickYes..

Default Express click

I installed the ClickYes utility before I even started MailMerging. I have used it for years. I can see it works, because Word doesn't ask for permission to connect to Outlook.

I realize that the lack of "This is the Answer, thanks" is not an indication that the problem was not solved. It DOES cause later visitors with teh same problem not to know which of the (many) suggestions actually worked. There is always the assumption that the last post (which nobody responded to) might have been the solution. That is how I got here and to MacroPod's final reply to this thread. Somebody on MS Answers NL alerted a Poster who had this same problem to this thread and the final post. As I mentioned, that post sounds promising, but with my current version of Windows I cannot make the change to the DLL file nor does the fixmapi file run.

I got to msforums.com because somebody on MSAnswersNL told me there was a solution here... yours. When your solution did not work (as I have described) I asked for help with it. Instead of helping with the question I asked (how can I perform the actions your described years ago, when Windows won't allow me to?), you responded with a question about my actual issue (did I re-install Office - which has nothing to do with my question to you). So I answered that and elaborated, because otherwise you would ask me one by one if I tried this or than (most of which I have), and thinking that it couldn't hurt to have another iron in the fire - especially one with a readership beyond the Netherlands. For the same reason and because I am not getting any solutions here or on MS Answers NL I have also posted on MS Answers US. I am not complaining, just casting my net wider to reach more people.

I have at least indicated that I have at least read many posts on MSAnswers, so it stands to reason that I asked the question there first (which got me sent to your post on MSforums.com in the first place). So I am not sure why I needed the cross posting guideline... twice. Didn't you just needlessly cross post by copying and pasting your post to MSAnswers US? :-) Since nobody seems to know (or at least isn't giving me) the answer (yet), cross posting seems to be indicated.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2016 Pro 64 bits. This didn't help.
I then uninstalled Office 2016 Pro 64 and installed Office 2016 Pro 32 bits. This solved the problem.

I have now renamed the directory where the 32 bit installation files are on an external SSD to INSTALL THIS 32 BITS VERSION. But I suspect I'll buy 2019 before I install 2016 again.

Thanks for thinking about my issue.
