Default Problem using a mailmerge template with new file

I used Word to create a Label mail merge to create labels from an .xlsm file.

I saved the mail merge as a template.

If I don't make any changes to the .xlsm file, when I can open the template, I get a pop up "Opening this document will run the following SQL command....".

I click on "Yes", navigate to the .xlsm file, click on it, and everything works.

The problem occurs when I make a change to the .xlsm file.

I find when I open the template, I get the popup, I still navigate to the .xlsm file and click on it. But then, instead of the template opening, it goes back to the popup.

I have to close the popup window, then the template opens, and I have to again select the .xlsm file (via the Select Recipients menu).

At this point, I can do the Preview and Update.

If I don't go through the procedure of selecting the .xlsm file twice. It doesn't work. The Preview and/or Update will be grayed out.

Is that the way it is suppose to work, or am I doing something wrong? It seems awfully convoluted.

See the Word macro to toggle the registry setting used by the SQL security warning at the end of Word VBA examples.

Rather than save the label merge document as a template, save it as a document (docx format)

Thanks for the reply, but I just discovered an interesting turn of events. I was having the problem on my Desktop computer running Word 365. When I run it on my Notebook running Office 2013, it works in a rational way.

The difference is, when I open the template on my Notebook, I get the SQL popup, but clicking on YES takes me right to the Mail Merge screen where I can select any Recipient .xlsm file, and everything works fine.

When I open the template on my Desktop, I get the SQL popup, but when I click YES, instead of displaying the Mail Merge screen, it opens Windows Explorer, showing Connect to New Data Source and NewSQLServerConnection. If, at this point, I do not navigate to the .xlsm source file and select it. I get the failure described in my original post.

Quit looking! I didn't find the problem but I fixed it.

I did what I had to to get the Mail Merge to open, then I saved it as another template (maybe I could have just saved it, but the name was misspelled anyway).

Well, lo and behold, when I open the new template, it goes right to the Mail Merge screen, no SQL check, and no Windows Explorer data source window.
Works on both PCs.

Yay!
