Default Is there a way to use dashes in IF statement merges

I'm trying to make some conditional merges based on text that contains a dash. This is what my coding looks like:

{IF { «F12» } = “Client - DNWTP” “This letter confirms that in accordance with your instructions, ABC Group will no longer be representing you in connection with your «F11» claim.” “”}

With some testing I know that it doesn't like the - however I can't believe I am the first to run across this issue. Is there a work around for this that does not involved updating our entire document management system to remove dashes?

Thanks,
