Set number of pages in a merged doc
Hi
I have a doc with lots of merge info, some of which pushes it onto 2 pages for some records but not for others. Is there a simple way of setting up the doc so it's always 2 pages long? - even if the data would fit on 1 page? (ie the 2nd page is blank) I could put some conditional lines to pad things out, but it would be quite tricky due to the complexity of it (I have inherited this from someone else), so I wondered if there was a simple way at all? Thanks |

Yes, you could put in a manual page break where you want to start the second page. This is going to look not that great and you could potentially end up with three pages rather than two.
A better method would be to change one or more of the following:

Hi
Manual page break would just add an extra page every time unless I made it conditional as you say, so I don't want to do that. I also can't change the layout because the client wants it untouched, so need some way of fixing the number of pages. Is it possible to place an object on page 2, like an empty text box, which would force 2 pages but not be visible when printed? - I tried it with a text box but it didn't seem to work, it still went to 1 page sometimes. A text box or object can only be on one page.
You could insert a manual page break (Ctrl+Enter) and then insert a large blank borderless textbox (at least half a page) on the new second page, then delete the page break. Be careful of your "Keep with next" and "Keep lines together" paragraph formatting or you could end up with an orphan signature block or the like at the top of your second page. [Edit: See Paul Edstein's post following for a much more elegant idea.] Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 05-12-2020 at 04:35 PM. |

At the end of your mailmerge main document, insert a field coded as:
{IF{SECTIONPAGES}= 1 {QUOTE 12}} This will result in every processed record containing the second page.

Hi guys
Sorry for the delay in reply. In the end I just bit the bullet and went through all the merge info and added a break where it was needed. I just saw Macropod's suggestion which looks promising, but I've done it the hard way now so wont try it out this time, but will the next time this sort of problem comes up. Thanks to all who posted suggestions - this forum has always been extremely helpful to me. |
