Default Mail Merge No Longer Working - Unable to Recognize DATA Source

I am having issues with accessing the .xlsx data I use with my mail merge document.

When I open the document, I am greeting with ...

"Opening this document will run the following SQL command:
SELECT * FROM 'DATA$' WHERE 'TYPE' = 'FR'
Data from your database will be placed in the document. Do you want to continue?"

On selecting yes I get ...

"Error has occured: Class not registered."

I press OK and get this dialogue:

"FR15NG.docx" is a mail merge main document. Word cannot find its data source, U:\Education\....\Dates\Data\May-25 (Sat) schedule_5.xlsx

I press the FIND DATA SOURCE button, and the Select Data Source dialogue open. It's source directory is defaulted to "C:\Users\me\Documents\My Data Sources" and lists two .odc file.

The File Name is populated with "May-25 (Sat) schedule_5".

I change the file type to .xlsx and navigate to and select the source file from it's directory. (The file exists where it is supposed to be!), and press OPEN.

The Select Table dialogue opens up. in the window I would expect to see the worksheet DATA (the source of the mail merge data 'DATA$'), it is empty. The workbook field is populated with "U:\Education\Schools\School Admin\Timetables\Dates\DATA.xls"

I have no idea what is going on as DATA.xls is not a workbook, and not the workbook I referenced to find the data.

Is anyone able to tell me what has gone wrong? Everything worked as expected for months before today. Last night the IT department did some things to my computer, including the removal of Office 2010 from it as Office 2016 was also installed. So, I wonder if that is a significant contributing factor.

Sounds like your IT department has messed up the Office upgrade, which should not have had any effect on the mailmerge. What would have such an effect is if they also changed the server name and/or other aspects of the filepath.

Default The Future of My Documents

Hi Paul, thank you for the reply. I don't know what that means to me and the future of my mail merges.

Far beit for me to approach our IT people as a lackie and tell them they botched up the update of Office on my computer. If I challenge them with that they are apt to take it away for me. I do know they installed Adobe Pro, and uninstalled Office 2010 that for some reason was residing in my computer alongside Office 2016. (Begs to question why our IT left 2010 in when they installed 2016 way back).

Is the issue now on my side, with my documents? Are they useless now? If I recreate them, would I still have the same problem? The data and mail merge documents are not on the computer, they are on a thumbdrive that I use between my school computer and my home computer allowing me to work with the documents at both. I can work with them at home, but no longer at school.

I'm kind of concerned as my new initiative is to make interactive forms using Adobe Pro from the mail merged documents. Being unabvle to make the mail merge documents now sets me back considerably if I have to reinvent the wheel, which if you recall from all your help over the years, was complex at times.

That's quite risky given Word's penchant for trashing documents when thumb drives aren't removed 'safely' - even after you've closed the documents. What may have changed on your work computer is the thumb drive's designation (e.g. what was formerly drive D on your work computer is now drive E).

Whether it makes a diiference or not, I always "eject" my thumbdrive before removing it. Advice given way back.

The thumbdrive, when I insert it still is rcognized by Windows Explorer as the drive letter it always has been. H: . Even when I "walk" windows to the data source, it can't find a table to reference.

Shortcuts on my desktop to files on the thumbdrive open. Whatever the issue, it seems exclusive to mail merge.

I even tried to do a fresh (new document, different location of source data) mail merge , exclusive of the thiumbdrive and it still failed. No error, but couldn't find the source worksheet in the workbook. I can just hope that IT chooses to repair Office.

That suggests your Office installation at work is faulty.
