Default Mail merge returning blank field

First let me say I apologize but I am not that tech savvy so if i'm not very clear about my issue please forgive me....

I'm trying to do a mail merge with an excel file and when i use the OLE databse file it works fine (other than the comma formatting not working), but when i try and use the merge via excel DDE way I get a blank line. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Why are you trying to use DDE? That method was deprecated many years ago.

As I said I'm not that savy so if there is a different method I'm all ears. I use that method becuase I want to keep the currency fomating (with comma's) when it merges into my word document. Is there a better way to do it?
