Default Mail Merge type is not being retained as ‘letter’ when document copied from one location to another

We have a lot of letters we need to copy from one folder to another but every time we do the mail merge changes from ‘Letter’ to ‘Word doc’ meaning we have to undo this for each individual document. Anyone know how to prevent this?
