Default Red line in a mail merge

Hi guys

This is a REALLY weird one and I'm a bit stumped as to the best way to proceed, so am looking for some guidance please.

A client has asked me to produce labels that look like this:

red line.jpg

This is a new branding they want to use - I need to produce a red line that covers the length of the last line of the address (with a bit of extra to left and right).

The red line has to be half-way up the font, not an underline.

So far I've got the address in a table, vertically justified to the bottom. I've then put a text box behind that which has a red background. So far so good.

My problem with doing it this way is that I need to find a way to adjust the width of the red bar so it matches the width of the last line of the address.

It's do-able as a post-merge operation with some vba looping through and adjusting the sizes, but I'd like to find a simpler way if possible.

I don't think I can get the length of a field via any sort of field code, but I guess if I could find a font where all the characters are just blocks I could merge the last line of the address with this font and just colour it red.

Anyone know of such a font? or maybe a way to tweak the underline to do this instead? or have any other ideas?

Thanks!

Do you have an actual document with such a label?

Hi Macropod

Unfortunately not - I've only got the graphic to go on.

I've just found a way of putting blocks of colour in, one for each letter of the last line. Unfortunately the address font is proportional and mixed case - I've now found out it contains a postcode - so I would not need to measure the font size in twips or something in order to control the number of blocks to use, so this is probably starting to to be too complicated to use.

This is what I have at the moment. The ref line is a text box with the coloured blocks (ASCII 166) floating in the background anchored to the last line of the address:

I suppose the easiest way to do this would be to have more control over the underline than word allows!

OK, just had another idea - I've merged the last line again in a text box placed behind the address and made the text colour white, but the underline colour red.

This gives me this:

red line 3.jpg

As it's based on the same text, the width will always be right (I added a coule of spaces to the start of the merge field).

My only problem now is that the line isn't thick enough.

Is there a way to stretch a font vertically? - I can't increase the point size as it will then no longer be the right width.

I think I just sussed it - variation on the above, use the text again, but make the background red as well as the text and you get:

red line 4.jpg

Hopefully this will be of some use should anyone else get a similar issue - just posting here has helped me think this through and work it out. This is a great forum!

Okay, I looked at the suggested posts and they are beyond my ability. They did give me an idea to try using a shape overlay the merge field and set the shape wrap option to be behind text. Works great
