Am I misunderstanding this statement?
Well, STARTS isn't the same as START, which is what the code you supplied had. That is why the code crashed even when using just:
StrSQL = "SELECT * FROM [CORE$] " & _
"ORDER BY [START] ASC, [COMPLEX] ASC, [UNIT] ASC"
