Default How to disable Mail Merge task pane in Word 2007?

I am about ready to throw my laptop through a wall.

I have a number of invoice templates I created that are linked to an excel
spreadsheet (customer database).

When I have Word set up to open new documents in the same window (the "Show all windows in the taskbar" box in Advanced options is unchecked) I also get a bonus- the Mail Merge task pane opens along with any new document I create (from templates).

When Word is set to open new documents in their own windows I do not get the Mail Merge task pane.

(System- Win 7 all updated, Word 2007 SP2)

I really, really, really would like word to stop doing that. I do NOT NEED THE DAMN TASK PANE!!!

Please help me.

Has this recently started doing this?

For example, after one of M$'s updates?

If this has started recently, I would do a System Restore back to a date just previous to the problem starting

Default Stop Mail Merge Task Pane from opening

I am having the same issue as MadKiwi, and like him, no one seems to be able to solve the problem. (it's been, what, almost 6 years since his post?)

When I open an existing mail merge Word 2007 document from its folder, the mail merge task pane is not open. If I open the same document after first opening Word, the task pane appears.

In the first scenario, after I click on Finish & Merge, and then Edit Individual Documents, if I need to go back to the original mail merge document, the task pane has magically opened. It was NOT there when I went to "Edit Individual Documents".

I know how to turn the $$%@^ thing off - what I want to know is how to keep it from turning on in the first place. There has to be a "kill" switch somewhere, and if I need to go spelunking around the registry, I can do that.

This is happening on a brand-new Win 7 64 bit laptop from the first time I opened the document. It was also doing this in my former laptop, also Win7 64 bit.

thanks!

I believe it's just over 2 years since the original post, when there weren't as many contributors to this forum as there are now. I, for one, didn't join till 8 months later. I note too that the OP never responded to the request for more details. One can reasonably conclude from this that the OP found an answer and never bothered posting back. That's not the same as saying no-one was able to solve the problem.

Whenever you open a mailmerge main document or a mailmerge template, Word should display a prompt asking whether you want it to run the SQL query that the document has been configured with. You won't get that query with an output document, though, as it doesn't contain the SQL statement (just the merged data).

Default Mail Merge Task Pane

Thanks for the reply, but, with all due respect, your answer has nothing to do with my problem.

I have a mail merge Word 2007 document that I use with the same Excel workbook. I have been using it for 10+ year. I get the prompt asking if I want to use the same SQL query. I always answer "yes".

The issue is with the mail merge task pane which is not there when I open the doc, and then magically appears on its own. (Please re-read the original post.)

Why does it do this? How can I stop it?

My original reply was couched in the terms I expressed it because of the many posts I've seen where people are confused about the SQL prompt that appears when a mailmerge document is opened. It gets called all sorts of things - including an error message.

I believe the appearance of the mailmerge task pane in the 'don't show all windows in the taskbar' mode is by design. If it really bother you, you could add the following sub to your 'normal' template's 'ThisDocument' module:
Code:
Private Sub Document_Open()
With ActiveWindow
  'Ignore any errors
  On Error Resume Next
  'Reduce flickering while changing settings
  .Visible = False
  'Hide the mailmerge task pane
  CommandBars("Mail Merge Panes").Visible = False
  'Restore the window now that we're finished
  .Visible = True
End With
End Sub
