Default Help with using catalog in Directory merge

Hello,

I have a one page document that I am trying to merge with an Excel spreadsheet. I want to use Customer (column A) for my key, and have the customer's products and cost merge onto one page, then generating a new page for the next customer.

I have tried copying the code suggested by Paul Edstein, but when I try to run the merge it errors at MERGESEQ, my code disappears and I am back to square one.

I am using Word 2010 64 bit.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!

Tami

My Microsoft Word Catalogue/Directory Mailmerge Tutorial can be downloaded from:
http://windowssecrets.com/forums/sho...merge-Tutorial
or:
http://www.gmayor.com/Zips/Catalogue%20Mailmerge.zip
Please read the tutorial (especially the Introduction) before trying to use the mailmerge document included with it.

Your post suggests, amongst other things, you might not have edited the field names to suit your mailmerge data source.

For some worked examples, see the attachments to the posts at:

Hello Paul!

I did change my field names to match the column labels. I even typed it all in manually, and still got the same result. I tried the code from Microsoft as well. I even tried to use Doug Robbins' add-in with no success.

I downloaded and read your tutorial but I can't seem to make sense of what I need to do to make the merge actually work.

I feel like I am missing something silly - I have three columns-customer, product and price. What I am trying to do is have each customer's products listed on a single page, then the next customer starts a new page, and so on.

Any tips you could offer would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you!

Without seeing your mailmerge main document, it's impossible to diagnose the issue. Can you attach it to a post (delete anything sensitive)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.

I can't see any connection between what's in your mailmerge main document and the tutorial. For starters, the tutorial shows everything being enclosed in the fairly complex field coding, none of which is in your document. Furthermore, your «Customer», «Product» & «Price» mergefields are all in textboxes, which would cause problems even in any ordinary mailmerge.

I just sent you what I was starting with. I have done text box merges before that worked great, and if I take the time to change all my rows to columns and insert a next record it works.

So are you saying I can't put the code from the tutorial into or behind a text box?

You should at least try to implement the tutorial's process. I don't expect to do all the work for you, plus I've pointed you to posts demonstrating the implementation.

I've tried. When I open the "Mail Merge Main Document" all it says is:

"If you haven’t read the tutorial document, please do so before using this document."

There are no fields in the document for me to copy!

Evidently you haven't even read the tutorial's Introduction, then...

I sure did. I am using 2010, and in advanced options I have field codes set to display always.

I have read the tutorial several times today. Can you please point me to what I am missing?

As the tutorial also says:
Quote:
For ease of identification, the fields used in the various examples are encompassed by square brackets (ie ‘[ ]’). To see the inner workings of any field, select both of the square brackets encompassing it and press Shift-F9. When you’re done, pressing Shift-F9 again will toggle the display back to showing the field’s results. Alternatively, you can toggle the field code display for all fields via Alt-F9 (Option-F9 on a Mac).
Have you done that? Doing so will reveal field code structures like:
Code:
{QUOTE{IF{MERGESEQ}= 1 {SET Key ""}}"{IF{MERGEFIELD City}<> {REF Key} "{IF{MERGESEQ}> 1 "
"}{MERGEFIELD State} {MERGEFIELD City}{SET Key {MERGEFIELD City}}
" } {MERGEFIELD Representative} {MERGEFIELD Sales}
"}
and
Code:
{QUOTE{IF{MERGESEQ}= 1 {SET Key ""} {SET LastKey {REF Key}}}{IF{MERGEFIELD State}<> {REF Key} "{IF{MERGESEQ}> 1 "
If you require more details about the above sales figures, please contact your {REF LastKey} Sales Manager.
Sincerely,

Customer Service Manager (National)
{DATE \@ "dddd, d MMMM yyyy"}
{IF{MERGEFIELD State}<> 0 {QUOTE 12}}"}{IF{MERGEFIELD State}<> 0 "Director,
Retail Sales {MERGEFIELD State}{SET Key {MERGEFIELD State}}
These are the sales totals for {MERGEFIELD State \* Charformat}
City Representative Sales
"}"}"{IF{MERGEFIELD State}<> 0 "{MERGEFIELD City} {MERGEFIELD Representative} {MERGEFIELD Sales \# $,0.00}
"}"}

Yes. When I try to copy the code and substitute my merge fields, it errors out at mergeseq and it won't let me toggle back to the code.

Toggling the field codes requires nothing more than pressing Alt-F9.

Wink Multiple Records Merge with Email

I have created a multiple document using a directory. My goal is to use this with email address. When I try and use it with Email, I get :

"You cannot send a catalog created by merging documents directly to mail, fax or a printer"

Hopefully, there might be a simple fix.
