Default field shading for drop downs

I have (sort of) mastered the field inserts and shading of those fields but in my merge document, I need to highlight (shade) a few drop down menus I have added and cannot seem to get the field shade to want to work on those. Ideas? Help?

You will need to explain what you are doing here as mail merge and form fields are mutually exclusive. If you want to combine the two you will need a VBA solution - http://www.gmayor.com/ManyToOne.htm in one to one mode shoul do the job, provided your data source is Excel.

I have a merge letter whose merge fields highlight through the application of have the field shading on always. In the letter there are a few places that have drop downs for a choice of Mr. Mrs. Ms. and a few other places that have drop down menus that need to have a selection chosen. I am trying to find a way to highlight those fields so the person using the letter will be "gently reminded" they need to select something in that drop down. Make sense?

It doesn't make any sense in the context of mail merge. Mail merge draws information from an external data source, such as Excel, to fill the fields, so user selection is not involved. Mailmerge with Word 2007/2010. As I said in my last post mail merge and form fields are mutually exclusive.

If you are really talking about a form, then legacy form fields including dropdown form fields are shaded if that option is set, but it is a Word option and not a document option, so users can choose not to display shading.

You can only validate a dropdown form field using macros and then if you have a default value that is not a required selection. You cannot force users to run macros, so that creates another issue.

Content controls create similar issues, but are not subject to field shading.
