Default Insert picture as a header with mail merge (resolution issues)

Hi all,

I love/live in excel but im rather new to advanced word and mail merge.

i need to insert a picture as a header into a merged document, i have followed this tutorial, http://wordnut.hubpages.com/hub/IncludePicture, and i can get it to work but visually its not right.

after inserting the link to file my image is automatically scaled down to fit the "page" even though i have set the header to have no margins(by moving the arrows on the ruler) and i have cropped the image to be 8.5 inchs wide(outside of word). there is no need for it to be scaled down.

as the tutorial says, you can not resize an inserted picture, the link becomes dead.

Is there a way for me to insert a merged picture to the full 8.5 inches wide without re-sizing after i insert picture??

can i insert a whole a4 .pdf as a background fill?

a work around that i am using now is to make the image(which is mostly white space) much smaller and insert the image on the right side of the document but that is not going to work for letter heads that use the whole horizontal page.

Are you trying to merge the SAME picture into each document, or a different picture for each record? Surely a letterhead would have the same picture, in which case insert the picture into the merge document you are using for the merge, and position it as required before running the merge.

For merging graphics see http://www.gmayor.com/mail_merge_graphics.htm and http://www.gmayor.com/mail_merge_graphics_addin.htm

As for the mechanics of inserting a picture, you should note that pictures are, by default, inserted in line with text, which means they will shrink (but never grow) to the width between the current margins. If you want the image to fill the width of the page beyond the margins, then it must be inserted as a 'floating' image, whereupon it can be positioned and resized as required or use a (negative) indents to set the current margins at the edge of the paper.

You can insert a single page PDF as an object (probably better to insert it in the header/footer) and set its wrap option to 'behind text'.

hi, thanks for the reply.

no, i have about 20 different letterheads for each mail merge value, i am using this equation(?) {INCLUDEPICTURE ".../pictures/Logos/{MERGEFIELD "internal_party" }.jpg \*MERGEFORMAT \d }

I have saved the .jpg files to be the same name as the {MERGEFIELD "internal_party" } result. this works well enough that it selects the correct picture.

thank you for the clarification on floating images, it appears from the testing that i have done that "in line with text" is the only type that gets the mail merge. as soon as i adjust to floating i keep the picture but lose the merge.

I will continue to use the links provided below and let you know how i get on. thanks for you help
