Default Embeding hyperlink within a template that autoupdates

I am using my work system to create a merge documents of application records.

The system uses a template with mergefields, one of which is application reference. It runs a merge using date criteria, and produces a word document showing multiple applications that meet the criteria. This document is then emailed out.

Each application is also on our website and I would like to have an embedded link within the emailed word document that would allow customers to click and be directed straight to the website.

My problem is – how do I embed a hyperlink within the template that auto updates to the correct reference number.

Thanks.
