Default Insert picture background in Word mail merge labels

I am using Word 2008 for Mac running on Max OSX 10.7.5

I want to make name tags and insert a picture background and make it transparent. I went to the first tag and inserted the picture and formatted it. Then I copied it and pasted to the rest of the name tags. Unfortunately, the picture wouldn't fit to cover the whole tag. I have so much trouble with pictures every time I try to do something with it. Do I have to create a text box and insert the picture into it?

I also want to put the name of our committee on each tag and format the font differently from the name. I want to format the name with a different font color and then merge with another Word document secondary file. It is not working for me! Should I format one name tag and then copy it to the others and then save it as a template. Then do the merge?

Whatever I try is NOT working for me. Could someone please help me? I tried the help pages, etc. and can't find anything on this.

I would SO APPRECIATE some help! I originally tried doing this on Avery's DesignPro and got so far. Their help is non-existent, so I'm trying Word. So far both are equally frustrating.

Hi obasanla,

After choosing your label format and connecting to the data source, insert your background image as in-line in the first label and format it to fill the label as much as practicable. By default, Word will constrain the image size so that it fits within the label without distortion. If the default doesn't fill the label, you'll have to choose whether and how much to distort or resize & crop the image. With this arrangement, you shouldn't need to try to make the images transparent.

As for the committee name & member names, simply insert the committe name into the first label, with a paragraph break after. Then format the committe name's paragraph with the attributes you want. Then, in the second paragraph, insert the mergefield for the committee members and format that paragraph how you want.

Once you've done the above, click on 'update labels', and Word will copy the first label's contents and paste it into each of the other labels.

You're now ready to execute the mailmerge.

Question One last thing

I did everything up to the last paragraph. You said to click on "update labels" but I can't find it! This is what my document looks like now. I tried to find it in help, but that didn't work.

I really appreciate your taking time to help me with this.

Blessings,
Cathy

I'me working from Word 2010, which is a bit different. However, on the Mailings tab on its Ribbon is a button with 'update labels' next to it. What did you click to get «NAME» onto all the labels? That probably serves the same function.

Default I got it to work

I went to the "select recipient's list" and clicked on the icon with the two arrows and it did it!

The "name" came from the "insert placeholder's" menu.

Thank you so much for showing me how to do this! I have Office 2010 for the Mac but haven't installed it yet.

I learned a lot from this experience.

Bless you,
Cathy

Default New problem with merged data

I was trying to add names to my secondary (data) file and discovered that Word has 'protected' this document from changes. It won't let me unprotect. Can you help with this? Does it automatically do something like this?

If you have the mailmerge main document open, Word opens the source file in the background and you can't open it for editing. However (in Word 2010, at least) the mailings tab on the Ribbon has an 'Edit Recipients List' function that allows you to choose which recipients get included and even to edit the source file by adding/deleting records. Alternatively, close the mailmerge main document, then open the source file.
