Red face How to disable Mail Merge task pane in Word 2010?

I have never used mail merge and never plan to.

I have Word 7 since near when came out updating from prior versions.

All of a sudden some doc saved before and reopened have the Mail Merge Pane. I have looked and looked, Googled to try and find how to get rid of that darn pain pane instead of having to kill it every time I open some docs.

Have no idea why or how it got "stuck" on some documents (not new it seems) Can not id what may have been different on those where the pane opens.

Thanks... pulling hair out.

Hi dave,

It's possibly being triggered by a mailmerge header in the problem documents. Do you get any messages when you open those documents?

I have never used headers... just footer on page 1 which is fine. . But you suggested a clue.. at one point made header margin smaller or zero since didn't want taking any room on top. I just opened one and edited header to no header, saved, closed.

When reopen still has the Mail Merge pane. When clicking where header would be still shows a header section but nothing but a paragraph symbol when reveal codes...which I can not delete. But can finding nothing to do with mail merge in header, footer or anywhere I find, yet pane comes up...

Hi dave,

A mailmerge header isn't something you'll see - it's part of the document metacode. You didn't answer my question about any prompts that you might get when you open the document, though. Mailmerge main documents usually give a prompt about running a query when they're opened.

If the document contains fields that look like «SomeField» or, if you press Alt-F9 and see fields like {MERGEFIELD SomeField}, that suggests it is a mailmerge main document, for which you should get the mailmerge prompt when you open the document - or maybe Word is just reacting to the presence of those fields. The only other thing I can think of is an automatic macro in the document that, for whatever reason, activates the mailmerge pane.

Just to eliminate any possible Word glitches, go to 'Programs & Features' in the Windows Control Panel and, using the 'Modify' option, repair Office.

Well that was interesting....

Alt-F9 flashes with brief activity but nothing shows up.

But Control Panel when I click on Microsoft Office 2010 ...actually Home and Student 2010.. brings up a setup error screen saying An Office 2003 installation is corrupted and setup can not continue.

I upgraded from Word 2003 years ago.. nothing shows in the Control Panel for Office 2003.

I do still have Office Front Page 2003.. have never found a replacement I like and just not into the learning curve of sharepoint or whatever it is and FrontPage works fine for limited use I need..

But maybe that is the issue.. the Front Page was standalone version not part of full Office 2003.

I've been using Word 2010 a long time and never had the Mail Merge appear but may have been related to a recent update.

Appreciate the ideas, at least I know I am not overlooking something obviously.

Also ran Revo Uninstaller Pro and nothing related to Office 2003 other than FrontPage.

When you upgraded, how did you remove Office 2003?

How did I remove.....?

Don't recall but I assume the Office 2003 uninstall . may have just had home and student not full Office not sure.

Bought new Home and Student 2010 in 2010. I have disks and it was not an upgrade. Then installed old FP 2003 separately, still have FP install disks.

You should probably have installed FrontPage 2003 before installing Office 2010, so that any shared components would update to the latest versions. Try reinstalling Office 2010 from the installation media. If that doesn't work, you'll probably need to uninstall both, then clean out any Office 2003 residue (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301) before reinstalling FrontPage 2003 then Office 2010.
