How to mail merge one to many HELP!!!
Hello,
I have a tough problem that I have never tried before. I am needing to create letters that are sent to lawyers. The problem is that the letter will be sent to one lawyer but have multiple clients on the same letter. Previously, that lawyer would get 30 of the same letters, but with different clients, sent to him. I am trying to have one letter to the lawyer with many clients on it. In my excel file, each lawyer does have a unique id. Any help is MOST appreciated! Thanks again, Steven |

Good morning,
Thank you for the response. I made a fake letter and data to show what I am needing. As I said, these letters will go to a single lawyer that has his own unique id but will have multiple clients and additional client info on the letter. Thanks, Steven |

Hi Steven,
You can use Word's Catalogue/Directory Mailmerge facility for this (the terminology depends on the Word version). To see how to do so with any mailmerge data source supported by Word, check out my Microsoft Word Catalogue/Directory Mailmerge Tutorial at: http://windowssecrets.com/forums/sho...ngs-(2000-2010) or http://www.gmayor.com/Zips/Catalogue%20Mailmerge.zip The tutorial covers everything from list creation to the insertion & calculation of values in multi-record tables in letters. Do read the tutorial before trying to use the mailmerge document included with it. For a recent, worked example, see the attachment to post #13 at: https://www.msofficeforums.com/mail-...nt-dollar.html Alternatively, you may want to try the Many to One utility on the MergeTools Add-in that you can download from the following page of Doug Robbins' Windows Live SkyDrive: https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=5aedc...615E886B%21111

Thank you for the reply. I am in the same situation as the example. Even the tutorial is a little over my head on this. I know that I need to assign the lawyer a unique Lawyer ID and make it the "key" so that the final merge will recognize to group the clients by that id. Just still not understanding how to insert the code in my word document to do that...where would you suggest I copy and paste from?
Thanks again for the help! |

Hi VerTigo456,
Most people would find at least some of the tutorial over their heads, even if experienced with other kinds of mailmerge. Work through the examples, together with the accompanying mailmerge main document and Excel data file, so that you gain more of an understanding of how they work. Ultimately, though, you don't really have to understand the intricacies - just how to adapt the fields to achieve your ends. For your document, you'll probably need something based on one of the examples from the 'Inserting Text After the Repeated Data' section.

That would be exactly what I need if I can get it to run lol. I had both add ins on the tool bar and both would not run for me. So I deleted both and reloaded Doug Robbins add in. When I try and run this add in on the toolbar under "Merge Many To One" by clicking "start merge" it gives me the following:
"The macro cannot be found or has been disabled because of your Macro security settings." So I followed the "show help" instructions of enabling all macros and it still did nothing. I then opened a brand new document to play it safe and it still gives same error message. Any suggestions? Thanks, Steven |

Hi Steven,
I don't know what you mean by 'both toolbars'. Nothing in my tutorial produces one and I'd have thought Doug's solution would only have produced one toolbar. In any event I can't really provide much help with his mailmerge tool, as I've never used it.

As I said in my previous post, nothing from my tutorial produces a toolbar - of any kind. So, if you've got one that's giving you problems, it isn't mine.

Cross-posted at: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...5-79235b9d810a
For cross-posting etiquette, please read: http://www.excelguru.ca/content.php?184 Having read the cross-post, it is evident that the second toolbar you're referring to is one from Graham Mayor's 'Many-to-One' addin. Again, this has nothing to do with my tutorial (which you can download from Graham's website).

Because I am a newb, I am getting you confused lol. I apologize for that. I had both add ins installed. I uninstalled both. There was nothing wrong with the toolbar at all. It simply added both of them side by side on the single toolbar. I was concerned if I cannot have both installed at the same time. I re-installed Rob's hoping this would fix the problem and still ran into the problem when I clicked start merge. "The macro cannot be found or has been disabled because of your Macro security settings." So I followed the "show help" instructions of enabling all macros and it still did nothing. I then opened a brand new document to play it safe and it still gives same error message. |

So far you've installed two separate addins, with their own toolbars, then removed either or both of them. Evidently the removal wasn't done correctly and Word still thinks one or more of them is still present. Go to Word Options|Addins and check whether either of them is still registered. If it is, you'll need to select its addin type from the 'manage' button, then select & remove that addin.
