Problems with label printing
Using Avery J8162 labels and MS Word 2010. I am using mail merge from an Excel address list. When I have finished setting up the labels the appear fine in the preview with the names and addresses showing within the label confines (dotted lines on the preview). When they print out the names and addresses lose their alignment and finish with the printing overlaping from one label to another. The top label is almost fine but has a small bit of the name from the next label ( vertically underneath it) on it, the next label vertically overlaps even more and so on. I have tried it several times and each time is the same. Rapidly runnig out of label sheets!!! |

Hi Tamworthfan,
That suggests you're using the wrong label specs for the mailmerge.

Paul,
I did check carefully that the setting in Word 2010 matched the Avery label number. It has worked correctly previously in other earlier versions of Word. The strange thing is that on preview it does show a dotted line for each label and the name and address fits in that perfectly. Thanks for your help anyway. |

Hi Tamworthfan,
The dotted lines that appear in the print layout view have nothing to do with labels on your stationery - they're merely table cell borders in the document itself. If you do a print preview, you'll see that the borders disappear. You might also check that the page size is correct (especially A4 vs Letter) and whether the 'Scale content for A4 or 8.5 x 11'" paper sizes' option has been checked.

Paul,
Thank you for that. I have subsequently tried going through the whole process again and the label printing has been perfect. Not sure what was wrong but I suspect it may have been something to do with the paper feed on my printer. So all is well, the christmas card envelopes can now have labels. Thanks. |

There's a nifty trick when it comes to troubleshooting printing problems such as this. First you focus on the printer and anything that you may have done wrong with the hardware (e.g. incorrect loading, misalignments, jams in the printer). If you find that everything is in order, then you move on to the software and see what settings may be wrong. It's usually just one or the other and hopefully this makes things easier for you.
