What's wrong with vBulletin? Can't edit posts or see preview text.
I've been away a while, and returned for a visit. I notice two apparently related problems in vBulletin (that's the software, apparently, that powers this forum):
1) When I try to preview my reply before I make it final, I can see the preview but the text box where I can make changes is empty. I have to back up to the previous page to make proofreading changes. 2) Similarly, when I post a comment and then try to Edit it, I can't; it opens up the box for me to change my remarks but it's empty, my text isn't there. Is this something new? Is it happening only to me? Has it been reported? Is it being worked on? |

Correction; that happened in the Excel and Outlook forums, but it doesn't seem to be happening in this one. That tells me it's probably in a setting somewhere, and can be fixed. Anyone know more?

Sorry for the inconvenience, Bob. No, I didn't change the forum except moving to a new server last month. All forums should work the same way, please try the following possible solutions to see if any of them make any differences before I move the forum to a more reliable server:
- Clear browser cache Or - Try a different browser Or - Switch to Standard Editor for "Message Editor Interface" on this page: https://www.msofficeforums.com/profi...do=editoptions (scroll down to the bottom) |

Hi, Matrix. I can add new information: It doesn't depend on which forum, after all, apparently. My current hypothesis is that it's based on the length of my post; short posts work fine, longer ones have the problem. Or something in the longer posts... This reply is working fine, but something I just sent cassie in the Excel-programming forum blanked out the Message text box while previewing.
I'll try some of your suggestions (I may be unwilling to switch browsers) and see what happens. I currently stay pretty busy with two clients, and don't get back here very often - as you may have noticed - so if no one else is complaining it may not be worth much of your attention. [This just in:] Aha! I just found the problem, or at least one trigger of it. I use 'em' dashes, inserting them using the <Alt-0151> code from my keyboard. I used them in the paragraph above, and the message text blanked out; I changed them to hyphens and it's back. Perhaps other special characters will do that too....Yes, it appears that any character not in the lower 127 will cause the problem. At least I know now how to get around it, though not why it's necessary. Some update in vBulletin, I suppose. I'll see whether I can report it to them. |

Thanks for your detailed feedback. The new server uses a new version of PHP, there are some compatibility issues that very probably cause this strange problem. The vBulletin is very old, but the new version is very buggy, many vBulletin forums are stuck at old versions or moved to other platforms, I tried a popular forum software twice and couldn't get used to its interface.

FWIW, I too have found that I am unable to edit some of my existing posts (e.g. the Mailmerge Tips and Tricks thread: https://www.msofficeforums.com/mail-...ps-tricks.html). A real PITA because, any time I want to update it, I have to re-input all the content from scratch and previewing it's a disaster.

It seems that we have to make changes, either downgrade the PHP version or switch to a different forum software.
