Default Excel copy formula

How can I take a formula cell copy and link it to another file? I have another employee that can go the the new cell where I want the cell to copy, type in the = then go to the other file, select the cell and hit enter and will copy it to the other file. When I do it, it does not copy and moves the cursur to the cell below.
