Default Odd Excel problem when 2010 spreadsheets

I am experiencing a very weird problem in Excel 2003. Whenever I open a document that was created in Excel 2010, (I have the compatibility pack installed) Excel tells me that the file is in use when I try to save. Then Excel offers to save the file in a different location but deletes the file from the original location. I have tried to copy the files locally to my hard drive, to ensure that I am the only person opening the file, and it still gives me this error.

Other people are not having this problem and I have tried different computers with the same problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi
It is just possible that the person that sent you the Excel file from 2010 sent it whilst it was open (i.e. file > send > mail recipient) and a flag is still set in the file to say it is open. Try asking the sender to save the file as a 2003 Excel file, then close it and copy the closed file into an email and send it to you.
I am not saying this will resolve your issue but it seems logical.
Let us know how you get on.
