Default Excel sort problem

Have a Mac using Snow Leopard purchased early 2010. Purchased Office Suite 2008 for Mac. Have been using it without issues until recently. When doing a sort in Excel have started getting a message "This operation requires the merged cells to be identically sized". Have tried repeatedly. Have not changed the format when adding data, have not asked for cells to be merged. Have tried copying to a new file. It will sort a small selection from the data base but not the whole or major part of it. (240 rows 13 columns). I thought to myself - try reinstalling the Office discs - but that stalls because it tells me that there is a more up to date version already installed - I guess because of online updates. Where to from here please? I am not an expert but am beyond the raw beginner stage. Jennifer

Me again, problem solved; thanks to Bjorn in an old post where he is helping someone else with a similar problem. Here's the cut and paste from that post:

Hi,
(note: Commands etc translated from Swedish and might not correspond to 100% to your English text)

Solution 1.
the easiest way is to mark all cells (25x400), then select menu Format/cells. Select the second tab from the left ("Adjustment" or somehting like that). Under "Text control", uncheck the (probably grey) checkbox called "Merge cells".

Now there shouldn't be any more megred cells.

Solution 2.
If you want to find them and keep them, there is a way of finding them by conditional formating (using the function Column() or Row() to paint either every second line or every second row in different colour).
Tell me if solution 1 doesn't work and you need help with details for solution 2.

Kind regards
Bjorn

Wow, Hello Sweden! Many thanks, Solution 1 worked for me. I am settling down for the night and perhaps you are waking up to the cold and the snow - we are in mid-Summer. Goodnight.
