Hi,
I assume you are aware of that this is quite easy to solve manually, with normal mathematic rules (result n = 0,8).

However, a way to solve this in Excel, almost without any mathematic knowledge, is the following method (which also will work for other formulas of the first grade).

Follow these steps:

1) You must write the formula in the "excel way", that is, writing the multiplication sign *

This would give: 4*n+2*(1-n)=2*n+10*(1-n)

2) Put everything on one side of the equal sign, making it "zero" on the other side of the equal sign. I guess you are aware of that everything changes sign when it is moved from "right to left side" (or vice versa). This is the little "mathematical knowledge" that is needed here

This would give: 4*n+2*(1-n)-2*n-10*(1-n)=0

3) Now enter the formula above (to the left of "=") into cell A1 in Excel.

This would give in cell A1: =4*n+2*(1-n)-2*n-10*(1-n)
(this would just now give an error, but have patience)

4) Short summary so far: When the formula in cell A1 has the result zero, for a specific value on "n" we have the wanted solution!

5) Now we must define "n". In cell A2, write any value (for example 99). Give this cell the very short name "n" (Menu: Insert / Name / Define).
When you have done this, cell A1 will currently show the result "982" (if you entered 99 in cell A2)

6) Now our goal is to change the value in cell A2, to make cell A1 become zero. There is a built-in menu-function for this in Excel (sorry for any translation mistakes on menu commands, I am using a Swedish Excel version): Choose menu: Tools / Goalseeking (or "Target seeking") ...

Fill in the pop-up window as follows:
Target cell = A1 (or $A$1, it doesn't matter)
Value = 0
Adjustable cell = A2 (or $A$2, it doesn't matter)

Press OK, and Excel will give you the value 0,8 in cell A2 as the solution!

Kind regards
Bjorn
