I agree with your assessment of how Windows can screw with your files. I researched online how to prevent Windows from automatically upgrading itself. Made all the changes and inserted all the "blocks" to keep the upgrades away. So far my computer has run smoothly ... no upgrades ... no problems

Windows gets frustrated because it can't upgrade itself. I keep getting notices about the lack of upgrades but just click them away and my computer continues to run great.
