Default Cannot paste INTO a workbook

I have recently migrated to Excel 365 - largely trouble-free but there's one thing I can no longer do . . .

I CAN copy part of a workbook and paste it elsewhere in the same workbook, or into another application.

But I CANNOT paste it into a different Excel workbook. CTRL V doesn't work and the Paste Special options are all greyed out.

I'm guessing this is due to a setting somewhere - does anyone have an idea whoich setting it might be ?

Thanks

PS I CAN paste text eg from a Note or a cell's contents, but I CANNOT paste a whoe cell or range of cells

As best I know ... it is not a 'setting'. Excel should simply paste ...

You may need to select REPAIR when attempting to re-install Excel. Or ... completely delete Excel then reboot your computer and re-install.

What was your previous version of Excel?

Are you using CTRL+C to copy? If so, try again using right mouse click copy and make sure you see the dancing border on the selection you're copying. Is it possible you think you're clicking CTRL+C and it's not "taking"? Just to make sure that's not it.

Are both your source files and destination files saved in the current .xlsx format?

When you are copying a range of cells from workbook 1, are you selecting just one cell (the upper-left-most) in your destination workbook, or another range? I think you must select just one cell and it pastes in the appropriate number of adjacent ones.

Can you check that your destination workbook/worksheet are not protected in any way?

Are you pasting where an area is blank and there are no merged cells? Or over the top of existing data?

Thank you for this helpful reply. Answers in red below . . .

I migrated from Excel 2010. Apart from the "Declare" issue in VBA, easily fixed, it was trouble-free.

Are you using CTRL+C to copy? If so, try again using right mouse click copy and make sure you see the dancing border on the selection you're copying. Is it possible you think you're clicking CTRL+C and it's not "taking"? Just to make sure that's not it. It is definitely "taking"

Are both your source files and destination files saved in the current .xlsx format? They are both .xlsm files

When you are copying a range of cells from workbook 1, are you selecting just one cell (the upper-left-most) in your destination workbook, or another range? I think you must select just one cell and it pastes in the appropriate number of adjacent ones. I am doing this correctly, as you describe

Can you check that your destination workbook/worksheet are not protected in any way? It is my suspicion that this is the problem but I cannot find it. There are no locked cells or protected worksheets

Are you pasting where an area is blank and there are no merged cells? Or over the top of existing data? The paste area is completely blank

Check clipboard settings: It's possible that there could be an issue with the clipboard settings on your computer. Open the "Clipboard" pane in Excel by going to the "Home" tab and clicking on the small arrow in the Clipboard group. Clear the clipboard by clicking on the "Clear All" button and try copying and pasting again.

Well thank you Chris - that has got me 95% of the way there. Its a curious story . . . 5% to go !

1. When I press CTRL C in the souice workbook, the cells are successfully pasted to the clipboard.
2. In the destination workbook, the cells are visible in the clipboard, but CTRL V does nothing.
3. Clicking on the item in the clipboard successfully pastes to the destination workbook
4. And . . . subsequently, CTRL V pastes it again

It is as through CTRL V is only being activated after the first paste has been made.

So I thought it might be something that has reassigned CTRL V, but it isn't . . . I put the Paste command on to the Quick Access Toolbar and it is greyed out until I have used the clipboard dialog to paste something, then the QAT button becomes activated and I can paste it again ! If I put something new on the clipboard the paste function is once again disabled.

So, you've given me a workaround - thank you for that - and now I am even more bemused what's going on

Wow, that's fascinating. I looked again and found these steps that might be helpful:

Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V not working in Windows 11/10

Did you see the bit about the Paste command (via the Quick Access Toolbar) not working either ?

It isn't only the CTRL V that doesn't work, it is also the command button (which is greyed out).

I am grateful that opening the clipboard and pasting from there works, or I wouldn't be able to paste at all.

As I mentioned, after I have pasted something from the clipboard, CTRL V does work (as does the command button). Sadly, having pasted something I don't usually want to paste it again.

This is one of the oddest bugs I've ever come across !

It IS certainly odd. The link I pasted has steps to do things like resetting the keyboard settings, which might be worth a try. But I have no relevant experience with that particular problem! 365 has worked fine for me.

Oh, one more question: You have added Office 265 to your computer -- but is it the same computer that has/had the older version on? We had a former IT guy upgrade us all here to 365 and he never removed Office 2010. This caused conflicts, some of which didn't show up right away, but after I removed the old version, things ran much more smoothly. They were mostly in selecting and opening documents, so I doubt it would cause any keyboard/command issues...

Good thought, but 365 is on a brand new Windows 11 PC.

I did run the keboard settings checks - no luck, but thanks anyway - useful link !

I'm still trying to get this to work !

I have narrowed down the problem - it only occurs when I try to paste into specific .xlsm workbooks.
Pasting works OK into any .xlsx workbook

Maybe something to do with the macro settings in the affected workbooks ? They were all migrated form Excel 2010. I have tried a fresh "save as" but that has made no difference.

PS1 I can paste a group of cells from one worksheet to another within a .xlsm workbook, but not into another .xlsm workbook
PS2 As I said earlier, I can paste text into a .xlsm workbook, but not whole cells

Perhaps post a copy of this offending workbook.

That's a good idea - it is attached

It contains sensitive data so I've stripped everything out, and confirmed that the issue persists on the one empty worksheet which remains . . .

. . . If I copy a cell or a range of cells from another workbook, I cannot use CTRL V or the Paste command on the QAT. However the range to be pasted shows up on the Clipboard and can be pasted by clicking on it. At which point CTRL V and the Paste command come back to life, but can only be used to paste the same item.

Clearly I have a workaround but I'd love to get to the bottom of this !

PS In the next reply it was suggested that Macros were the problem. I have removed them all - and the problem persists. Anyway, I've attached the file without Macros.

Hi to all.
To solve your issue you will have to work on the macros in the ThisWorkbook module.
