Default Open second instance of a workbook 2010 as read only method fails for 2013

Hi,
in Excel 2010 , if I launch my finances workbook from desktop shortcut and it appears on screen I get hold of it at top and drag bang it against RHS screen edge and it occupies RHS half of screen.

I then would go to the desktop shortcut for excel itself and launch another instance of excel, then open that excel file by selecting it from recent files list it shows, it says already open so it will be 'read only' and I accept that 'read only' and bang it against left side of screen, I now have my file visible twice, read only at left and editable at right.

Now I can copy data and formats from one page at left to another at right dead easy. I can view one page alongside another dead easy. Look for Tesco food Current ac at left and copy paste it into spending sheet at right etc !

When I do this now in Excel 2013 windows 10 that method fails, the one at left is a blank new sheet new file.

if I launch Excel from desktop shortcut and bang it against lhs screen then browse to the file (I already have open at rhs) it opens the file but reopens in fact the one at rhs, when I bang that at right, the left half is an empty excel file again.

Basically it refuses to open a read only file version of the one already open.

How do I solve this problem ?

is this windows 10 or a change in design of Excel ?

Cheers

Excel changed in 2013 from SDI to MDI (single/multiple document interface).

May I ask why you need a second read-only copy specifically rather than just opening a new window on the same workbook?

Hi,
I dont mind what method I use as long as left half of screen I can go to any page (sheet) in my workbook and in right half of screen is my workbook fully functional and able to be typed into, have colours changed, be pastef to from that at left etc.

How do I then manage this as it seems you have another way I wasnt aware of. I just found that by opening the workbook again using the excel prog via its shortcut on the desktop and choosing the file I already have open it opened it again as read only, allowing me to go through the sheets.

Please talk me through the steps involved to achieve this.

Cheers

Open the workbook, then on the View tab, choose New Window. You will then have two independent windows open on the same workbook and you can copy paste etc between them. Make sure to close one of them before saving the workbook or it will open up again with two windows (unless that's what you want).

Hi,

that works, however how do I make that second window a 'read only' else if I inadvertently alter something in it that will also alter my workbook into which I am copying values from it.

The prior method of opening the workbook again, made it read only.

Cheers

Hi, I alter my statement, it doesnt work,

At right I have a sheet for monthly income from investments delivering such,
at left I want the sheet showing annual incomings outgoings, from where I will source that data.
At left I click the link in the index page for annual IN OUT 2022, and horror, the right hand one becomes that sheet.

How do I make the click on sheet link alter the window the click is made in, and not alter the window at right ?
They are one of the same workbooks.

The old method had a read only and one could do this above and it only operated on the left workbook, it didnt keep altering the sheets at right.

If this is Excel thinking they will make changes for the better, this is a nightmare, links in left workbook alter sheets in right workbook.

So is there a way to limit the action to just the left workbook when I click on the hyperlink in that workbook to the sheet in the index page ?
