Default How to lookup a value as displayed

I have custom formatting "M00000" to display product codes such as: M00123, M20330, M00098

However, when I do VLOOKUP, Excel sees 123, 20330, 98. How do I make Excel lookup the full product code as displayed?

OK, I've found the answer to my own question. I need to use the TEXT function, e.g. TEXT(123,"M00000").
