Default File is locked for editing by 'me' issue

I am the only one who uses the computer and the file is stored locally and NOT on a server. I am NOT part of any work domain as it's my personal PC.

When I open the Excel file, I get a message saying that the file is locked for editing by 'my name'. There is no owner file (~$doc.xlsx) and I even rebooted the machine and still the same issue.

Even I renamed the file and still the same issue. Saving as a new name also didn't help.

I searched for solutions and nothing seemed to help. Any ideas folks as I am going nuts!

Btw, I am using Excel 2019.

I get the "File in use" message and click on Notify and after a minute or two, I get a message saying it's available for editing and when I click Read-Write, it says that the file is locked for editing and asking me to click on Notify. Crazy and microsoft developers are something else! lol

Is it possible that your computer is slow to respond to open the file so you decide to click on it a second time to open it in the belief that the first 'open' did not work? This second 'Open' command for the same file will give the issue you are having. Sometimes impatience, nervous fingers and double-click can give these issues. I know. I have done it myself.

Try waiting a bit longer to see if the file opens at first attempt.

No idea what's going on so just to throw my cent: try opening and saving with LibreOffice or OpenOffice.

PS. Hi to all.

Zeref, Is OneDrive installed on that machine?
Do you have any BackUp software that runs?

Wow, I've had this happen, but usually a reboot cures it. By reboot, you're doing a complete shutdown and a cold start? If not, give that a try. Wait until it's fully powered down.

I like rollis13's suggestion of trying to open it in one of the open-source programs. I would also be curious as to whether you're first opening Excel, and then selecting and opening the file from within Excel, or clicking on the file in File Explorer.

I would also suggest running the repair on Excel/Office in "Add or remove programs." We're on Office 365 and I've had to do this a few times. We also had an issue for a while from our IT guy installing 365 and not removing the old Office. Files would open if accessed from within the program, but when double clicked in File Explorer or on the desktop, they would appear to open but be invisible. Eliminating the other Office and running a repair cured this. You might right-mouse-click on your file and check out what your computer is offering under the open-ended "Open With..." line.

I also had a problem after I tried to open an old WordPerfect file in Word. Apparently it tried unsuccessfully to load it and messed things up until I ran the repair. So is it possible you opened something non-Excel in Excel recently?

Hope you are able to figure it out!

Best regards,

Ann
