Help required in working out the order of precedence in formulas
Hi,
I’m learning about formulas and the order of operations. I know that whatever is in parentheses takes highest precedence, and if there are more than one set of parentheses in a formula, you work from the innermost set and work out. I’ve come across an example containing an exponent, along with other mathematical operators, and want some help in determining the order in which to calculate the formula. The example formula is: =(4 to the power of 2+3/1*30)-10 Starting with what’s inside the parentheses: 1. 4 to the power of 2 = 16 2. 16/1 = 16 (working from left to right) 3. 16*30 = 480 4. 480+3 = 483 5. Finally outside the parentheses 483-10 = 473 Would this be the correct order? Thanks in advance. Cheers |

The simplest method is to put the formula in a cell, then click the Evaluate Formula button on the Formulas tab, you will then be able to step through the evaluation sequence.
But no, that is not the correct order for the formula you posted. The answer should be 96... |

Many thanks for your reply. I've entered the formula as you've outlined here, and come to 96 as the result.
Clicking on the Evaluate Formula button and being able to see each step in order was a great help...thanks for bringing this to my attention which will help me immensely in the future.. Cheers |

The formula looks like
=(4^2 + 3/1*30)-10 Calculating step-wise: =(16 + 1/3*30)-10; =(16 + 3*30)-10; =(16 + 90) -10; =109 - 10 = 96 In case different result was excepted, the formula must be changed! |

Thanks for your reply. The Evaluate Formula button is a great help in figuring out what parts of the formula to evaluate first, second etc. With lots of practice it will get easier! I appreciate both of you replying and giving me your help with this...
