The only way I know how to do that is, open a new book then immediately save it as a xlsm file.
That is correct ... who first have to save the workbook as .XLSM

I have this code embedded in a workbook. How do I view it when I'm in the book?
Right click any sheet tab, then select VIEW CODE.

The suggested macro found in How to highlight active cell or selection in Excel? should be pasted in the ThisWorkbook module.

Right click any sheet tab and select VIEW CODE.

Then, on the left side, double-click the module name ThisWorkbook.

Now, paste the macro code in the large white colored window on the right.

Save the workbook as .XLSM and close it.

Re-open the workbook and click on any cell.

Thanks for the reply.
I already have the code embedded in a xlsm workbook and it's working. No matter what I click or right click on, I don't see the code.

If you already have the code in the workbook ... and the code is working as it should ... where did you paste the code ?

You are listed as a "Advanced Beginner" in this forum ... you cannot say you don't see any code.

My listing is out running my ability.

I was in a xlsx workbook and followed the instructions in this link.
Highlight active cell or selection with VBA code

When I tried to save the book, I got a message telling me I could only save it as a macro enabled book so I saved it as a xlsm. When I opened that book. the macro worked fine. My problem is, when I hit ALT>11' an empty code window show up. When I hit CTRL>R, the project explorer will show up. hitting anything in it doesn't bring up anything in the code window.

Go to ThisWorkbook module and see if you need to scroll down or up .... left or right.

Perhaps the code is simply "off screen".
