Allowing sorting by users in a protected sheet
Here is my dilemma...
I have an Excel sheet that has cells where folks are not allowed to edit and others where they do need to be allowed (insert data) I understand and know how to allow access to what they should be able to do and no access to what they should not be able to do. I know how to protect the sheet with a password. Here's the rub which I can't figure out, assuming there is a way to do this. I still need them to be able to sort the column(s) without being able to change info in the cells where they are not allowed to. For example, I want them to be able to sort company names alphabetically while not having the ability to change the name. I have checked the allow to sort/filter boxes during my setup, but still have a problem. The problem is that when I set this up and try to filter it won't allow me to do so and asks for a password.. It comes up with something like "the sheet is password protected and you may need to enter a password" Them having to enter a password really defeats the purpose of what I am trying to do. Maybe I am missing something so I thought I would come to the pros to find out. In a nutshell, I want the sheet protected but want them to be able to filter without first having to enter a password. Thanks in advance![/SIZE] PS: To be more specific, I need it to allow them for example to put names in alphabetical order. I know the setup will allow them to pick a name, date, etc. but I want them to be able to have all filter functions they would have if the sheet was not protected. In your sorting macro, provide the password to unprotect the sheet first, before the sorting is actually done. Then password protect the sheet at the end.
If the sort will always be alphabetical, include a command button tied to the sort macro. That way the sort will occur in a blink of an eye and the user won't be able to perform any functions on the workbook ... just the sort. |

Thank you. Now I just need to know where I find/how I make a sorting macro!

You can search for one that fits your purposes.
You can also record a macro and use that code in a macro. How to Record a Macro in Excel - A Step by Step Guide - Trump Excel |
