Default COUNTIF - A vs. AA???

I can't find the formula for COUNTIF when looking for cells with a single "A" vs "AA". These cells also have numbers at the end.

The two variants in the example provided are
=COUNTIF(D8 : D18, "A*")
=COUNTIF(D8 : D18, "AA*")

Looks like you always have a space after the A or AA or AAA, so =COUNTIF(G8:G18, "A *")

perhaps subtract one from the other:
Code:
=COUNTIF(D8:D18, "A*")-COUNTIF(D8:D18, "AA*")
?
