Default How to get autonumber series if adjacent cell has merged cells?

In place of (5,6,7,8) I should have 5 because adjacent cell has merged cells.

In place of (13,14,15.....20) it should show "10" because adjacent cell has merged cells.

the easy answer is dont use merge as it is the worse thing you can do in a spreadsheet and will only cause problems

but you could use =COUNTA($B$1:B1)

Check the Net about "absolute" and "relative" cell references
